THE STRAND, RUSSELL, FAR NORTH, NEW ZEALAND

Programme: Beach House
Site area: 1182sqm, Build area: 308.5sqm
Status: Approved Resource Consent, Credit: Duncan Firth, Justin Frizelle
Description:
Historical renovation located in New Zealand’s first ever capital in the heart of Russell, on the foreshore. It’s been a tricky project to navigate with NZ Historical Places Trust involved, ecologists, archaeologists and local Iwi. The architectural approach was to produce a simple NZ beach mid-century architecture appearance with lots of light, views and outdoor living areas, whilst responding sympathetically to its context.
The project takes an existing 1970’s beach house and totally revamps the design. The floor plan has been re-planned and modernized with the insertion of an additional living wing, boat shed and lots of additional outdoor living space and deck.
