HORTON ROAD HOUSE, TASMAN, NEW ZEALAND

Programme: Family House
Site area: 12000sqm, Build area: 249sqm
Status: Built, Credit: Duncan Firth, Rob Wilks, Mark Douglas Builders Ltd
Description: Horton Road house is situated overlooking Tasman Bay. The site is elevated facing due East for ocean views. This meant the house had to work on an East to West axis for view, and North to South axis for passive solar gain. The design resulted in two large mono pitch roof wings designed to visually merge with landscape, maximising views to East, and optimising North sunlight. A large protected West outdoor living courtyard shields users from cold North Easterly winds. High performance building materials consist of SIP walls, metal insulated roof, exposed thermally broken concrete slab, insulated glass, airtightness, cedar cladding, metal cladding, 30,000L of rainwater storage, and an eco-cycle waste system to treat sewage.
