WAIPU COVE HOUSE, WAIPU, NEW ZEALAND
Waipu Cove House in Waipu, New Zealand, is a house conceived from its unique natural context.
The 360sqm house combines a free flowing organic floor plan layout that bends around a hill crest following seasonal sun paths, wind directions, optimised view and topography. Identifying how the house was going to aesthetically integrate with site, while optimising passive solar gain was the beginning point in design.
Several versions of the floor plan were developed to achieve an asymmetrical, proportional layout that worked with both the formal appearance and environmental design requirements.
A Centralised Japanese Zen courtyard links the building segments together creating an interesting and revealing experience of moving through the house while being witness to the unique natural environment.
